Before anything else: who calls 911, who meets the ambulance, where it enters, where the AED is, who brings it, and how a spine board reaches the furthest point of play. Written, distributed, and walked through with venue staff before the first whistle. Most events have never done the walk-through, and it is where the problems surface.
At youth and amateur level, heat illness sends more athletes to hospital than contact injury. We monitor wet bulb globe temperature rather than air temperature, because humidity is what defeats sweating. Cold water immersion on site is the single most effective response to exertional heat stroke, and we bring the means to do it. Tell us in advance if you can schedule around peak heat - it is better than treating the consequences.
Return-to-play after a suspected concussion is a clinical decision and it sits with the covering clinician, not with a coach, a parent or the athlete. We will discuss it, and we will not be argued out of it. Agreeing that in advance avoids a difficult conversation on a sideline in front of a crowd.
